 | Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2 and 3 |
Architectural Desktop utilizes many new
concepts and techniques that make training for new users especially important.
Regardless of previous experience with AutoCAD and AutoCAD-based third-party
applications, the ObjectARX structure of ADT will provide an extraordinary
challenge for any organization seeking a cost-effective implementation
of this new software.
The full ADT installation includes the AEC Details product for constructing and drafting
parametric architectural details. This is the remaining holdover from the
previous Softdesk applications that have been retained in ADT by popular
demand. It is an especially effective tool in the architectural office, and well
worth learning about.
I have several years of experience working with Details, and providing training
and support for this software.
Software Support
- Program Setup and Customization
- A critical ingredient of the successful implementation of any new
software application is program setup and deployment. Almost all
out-of-the-box software applications require some massaging, from
simple fine-tuning to a major effort to install a company's custom
standards and working methodologies. Off-the-shelf software seldom
works exactly the way a company desires in all respects, and
customization of symbols, layers, text styles, etc. should occur
before embarking on a major training program, so that people are
working with company standards from the beginning.
-
- CAD Standards Development and Implementation
- CAD Standards development and implementation remain among the most
troublesome issues in many organizations. We've written quite a bit
regarding CAD Standards in CADALYST over the past several years, and
recently Mark Middlebrook wrote an excellent treatise on the subject
for the April 2000 issue. In that same issue, I wrote an overview of
the contents of the recently released National CADD Standard for the
monthly CAD Manager column. I have worked with CAD standards issues
for many clients over the years, and can help with your needs for
standards development and implementation.

- Post-Training Support
- With complex computer applications like CAD software, it is seldom
sufficient to just provide a few days of training, and then expect
that people will be able to productively use the software from that
point forward. Invariably, new users will require on-going support and
coaching as they start to apply their newly-learned software skills to
real architectural projects.
